Correspondence, 1868-1873.

Correspondence, 1868-1873, mainly on business matters. Most of the letters are from Van Rensselaer to his cousin Gerard Beekman, with a few to James Beekman, some letters from Thomas W. Ogden, and a few letters to and from other correspondents. Gerard Beekman managed Van Rensselaer's financial affairs during this period. Most of them concern business, though there is some discussion of family and personal matters, with occasional comment on public events - a firm prediction in 1869 that the Pope would not be declared infallible. Many of the earlier letters discuss the sale of some lots in New York City between 150th and and 152nd Street; maps give the location and prices of the properties. Thomas W. Ogden either bought them or acted on behalf of the buyers; several letters from him discuss his delays in making mortgage payments.
